Allen Custom Drills Forge Ahead
Rural Contractor & Large Scale Farmer: June/July 2021

Tough, custom-made air seeder drills from Allen Custom Drills are operating from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island, and are now distributed by a number of dealers around the country.

Allen drills are also exported to Australia through dealers in Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales.

Although no two Allen drills are exactly the same, after years of development and successful production, there are now five base models. They can be modified to suit the different needs and demands of farmers and contractors.

Triple disc drills are the most common models in the Allen range. They feature a wavy opening disc to provide penetration and tilth in the soil, followed by a double seeding disc arrangement and press wheel.

The Ergonomic Drill, commonly referred to as the E-D Series, incorporates an entry level triple disc system. E-D Series drills are available in 3-4m working widths with 5-inch or 6-inch row spacings.

The Contour Drill, or C-D Series, also incorporates the triple disc system, but it has a heavier and more robust design than the E-D Series. C-D Series drills are available in 3-6m working widths with 5-inch or 6-inch row spacings.

Both models feature an Accord metering and distribution system combined with a touchscreen rate controller with GPS-based coverage mapping for proof of placement.

Allen Custom drills can be configured to apply seed only or seed and fertiliser. They can also operate optional small seed and slug bait applicators.

“This combination has proven to offer the simplest calibration and a high standard of accuracy,” says Allen Custom Drill co-director Craig Allen.

The company is in full swing and moving fast to prepare drills for delivery in spring 2021. A large number of orders are already booked and in the production schedule.

“It has been an exciting journey over the past 15 years together. When we started out, our production was just three drills in one year. We are now a strong manufacturing team, supported by great family-owned and operated dealerships.

“Together we stand behind our strong product, which can deliver much more to our agricultural communities. We are proud of New Zealand farmers and contractors who have also gone from strength to strength despite the challenges they have faced over the years.

“We are honoured to be able to design and build seed drills that meet their needs and can help them farm efficiently and profitably,” say company directors Craig and Deb Allen.
